Bronze Baoule Bracelet. The Baoule people are the most significant group in the Ivory Coast. The ruling people there, they descended from the Ashanti in Ghana West Africa. The legend behind this migration was that the Baoule people fled from Ashanti warriors and came to a river that they couldn't cross. Facing certain death, they sought the aid of a local sorcerer who told them to cast a child into the river to appease the river spirit. The Baoule leader handed over his own child to the sorcerer, who threw the child into the river. Immediately after this, an extraordinary number of hippos appeared on the surface of the river waters. The Baoule escaped their pursuers; and the hippos immediately receded back into the river.
