Brass Baoule Dolls. The Bouale people are the most significant tribe in Ivory Coast. The ruling tribe there, they migrated from the Ashanti region in Ghana. The legend behind this fascinating people is that when the Bouale fled from the Ashanti warriors they came to a river that they couldn't cross. Facing certain death, they sought the aid of a local sorcerer who told them to cast a child into the river to appease the river spirit. The Baoule leader handed over his own child to the sorcerer, who threw the child into the river. Immediately after this, an extraordinary number of hippos appeared on the surface of the river waters. The Baoule escaped their pursuers; and the hippos immediately receded back into the river. The Baoule dolls pictured here have significant meaning as the Bouale treasure round faces. Young Baoule girls will keep wooden dolls with round faces to help themselves to bear children with round faces. These brass figures represent these wooden dolls. Each figure 8.5" tall weighing 11oz. each. Made in Ivory Coast
